If you are a freshman or sophomore in college going home for Thanksgiving or Winter break, watch out for the big question—What is your major? Choosing a college major feels like a daunting task, as if it will define you and profoundly affect the rest of your life. You may hear a dozen voices going off in your head, your parents telling you to major in something practical and your six-year-old self urging you to follow your dreams. If you don’t have an answer to this question yet, don’t worry. Take time to reflect on what your skills are, what kind of person you are and, above all, what you enjoy.

Before you read any further, I want you to know that, in most cases, you do not need to know exactly what you want to do in life the minute you arrive on campus. In fact, many students change their college major more than once as they discover new areas of interest. (I personally changed mine 4 times.) I was asked to write on the subject of passion vs. practicality in relation to choosing a college major and the pursuit of a career. It’s a question many of us have struggled with — do I follow my dreams or be practical and go the tried and true career path? Ultimately, I believe you are the only one who can answer this question. Far be it from me to advise the next great novelist, film-maker, artist, actor, or rock star to pursue a degree in health care because these jobs are projected to be in demand. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado, in a town that draws crowds year-round for pretty much any outdoor activity you can imagine – tourists came to ski, hike, kayak and bike in my backyard.
I worked, like most of my friends, in the coffee houses, restaurants and shops in Glenwood Springs throughout high school. And when I talked to visitors in our area, they often mentioned that they wished they could live their outdoor vacation lifestyle forever. I guess no one ever told them they could.

During this time of economic volatility, we are all beginning to realize that life as we know it will forever be different. But that doesn’t change the ever-present questions on the mind of most high school seniors: What are my college options? What colleges should I apply to? Do I want my parents to foot the bill for an expensive education?
So what exactly should you do to gain access to the best college opportunities during this uncertain time?
Once upon a time, YouTube was a place to watch silly videos. Now, about ten hours of video is uploaded to the site every minute and many of those videos are actually news. A Google search of “news blog” brought up over a billion hits. Many people like watching or reading the news on the internet, rather than watching it at five o’clock — It’s just more convenient. So, are journalism programs implementing new media (online videos, websites, blogs) into their curriculum?
Ever since Al Gore made An Inconvenient Truth, “going green” has been the topic of discussion. It’s sad that a film had to be the one thing to make us see that our planet isn’t disposable, but nevertheless, some colleges and universities are finally jumping on the green wagon to offer green degrees for students looking to make a difference environmentally and globally.
