Online Education Rising in Popularity

January 02, 2008 By: Elizabeth Kudner Category: Online programs No Comments →

According to recent surveys, online education is more popular than ever.  Nearly one in five students take at least one course online and 1.5 million students take all of their courses online.  8% of all students at U.S. degree-granting, Title IV schools and 20% of adult students are enrolled in online degree programs.

This is causing a dramatic shift in education as online courses provide increased access to education.  The majority of current online students are working adults with an average age of 34.  Without the flexibility of online classes, most of these busy adults would never enroll in higher ed.  Online classes are providing a viable option for working adults, busy mothers, rural Americans and even soldiers serving in Bagdad.  In a recent story by NPR, they interviewed students from park managers in Montana to a rural mother of six who see online courses as their only option.
