Andy, I agree with your advice to write about what makes you unique. A unique passion will help you stand out or how you have overcome adversity. Most people don't get through life without having to overcome some obstacles! If you are entering college and you've had a pretty smooth sail through life, that's great, but if not, you can use your challenges and how you've met them as an essay topic. I read this great article over on Education Nation that reveals information about college admissions panels. I encourage those applying to give it a read! http://www.educatednation.com/2009/04/09/college-admissions-panels-using-their-powers-for-good/
Good luck!

Great, great article Andy - I know that when I wrote my essay to the school I eventually graduated from I took a lot of the hints that you gave - especially letting the admissions officers know who I was beyond my GPA. I hesitated to divulge too much personal information but found that it must've paid off because although I was just below the minimum GPA req's I still got accepted. Your essay isn't going to get you in by itself - but it does end up making or breaking a lot of people.
