What Every Student Should Know About College Apps
College applications. Two words guaranteed to strike fear and anxiety into the heart of every high school senior. All the information, dates and pressure are enough to drive you crazy. As someone who’s been there and done that, every student should follow this list of college application tips to help you stay sane:
1) Organize, Organize, Organize
The information overload seems daunting at first, so create a spreadsheet or a list somewhere to keep track of deadlines, requirements and fees for each school you’re applying to. Once you have everything in one place, it will be easier to see exactly what you need to do. (You can also shock your parents by printing them a copy…)
2) Know Your Limits
Sure, you might be interested in 25 schools, but will you really apply to all of them? Be honest with yourself. Where could you see yourself happy and where do you have a strong chance of getting in?
3) Use the Common App
More than 150 colleges nationwide use what is called “The Common App.” It’s a general application you fill out once and submit to different schools. Check it out to see if your schools use it. It will save loads of time.
FYI: Certain schools may require you to fill out a school-specific supplement in addition to the Common App. Find out by visiting the Common App site or the specific university’s admission page.
4) Surf the Web
Take advantage of all the information online. Every college has a Web site with loads of information, from admissions deadlines to virtual tours. These are a great way to discover exactly what you need to do in the application process. There are also several sites that offer admissions help including Education Planner , College Board, or the College Confidential Student Forum.
5) Get a Head Start
Don’t wait until two weeks before the application deadline to start getting your stuff together. There are many steps to the application process, so start early.
6) Breathe
You can (and will!) get everything done. Take the whole process day-by-day and don’t forget to enjoy this exciting time!
