Taking Care of Your Acne While You’re in College

Being in college means plenty of changes to your schedule, new eating habits, and new hygiene habits. Going to college can take a toll on the condition of your skin if you are not careful. Here are some ways to treat and prevent acne while you are going to college.

Maintain a Daily and Nightly Skincare Routine
Especially with new college schedules and obligations, it can be extremely tempting to skip a proper skincare routine when you are tired or pressed for time. In can be tempting to roll right out of bed in the morning and head straight to class, but starting the day off with a washed faced is essential.

After attending multiple classes in a day, spending long hours studying or going out with friends, it can be really easy to go straight to bed at night. However, your skin repairs and rejuvenates itself while you are sleeping and it needs to be clean in order to do this correctly. If you wear makeup, it becomes even more important to wash your face before you go to bed, or else your pores can clog and your skin might be the worse for wear the next day.

If washing your face in the morning or before you go to sleep feels too imposing, you can always use moisturized facial cleaning wipes, and makeup remover wipes beforehand if necessary. However, it is ideal to give your face a thorough wash using warm water and a mild facial cleanser at least once a day.

Keep Your Skin and Body Hydrated
Applying moisturizer to your face and body and drinking plenty of water each day will give your skin the moisture it needs in order to repair itself by shedding damaged cells and creating new, healthy cells. It is always a good idea to get a water bottle that you can carry with you to drink from and fill up throughout the day. After washing your face and body, use a moisturizer that you love and that is meant for your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, it might be best to use an oil-free moisturizer.

Healthy Eating Habits for Better Skin
When you have a lot to do or you are just plain tired from the day, it is really convenient to eat something that is quick, but unhealthy. Although these greasy, fatty, fast meals taste great and are fine to indulge in every once in awhile, they are bad for your body in excess and in turn, bad for your skin. Plan your meals throughout the week so that you are getting healthy meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Get the Sleep You (and Your Skin) Need
Since your skin repairs itself while you are sleeping, it makes sense that insufficient sleep leaves your skin with insufficient time to repair itself. For the sake of your skin and your entire body, plan ahead so that you are getting around seven to eight hours of sleep each night in between going to class, studying, and spending time with friends.

Practice Relaxation Techniques
The hormones released during stress can cause or worsen acne. If you find yourself stressing out day to day, it is a good idea to practice some relaxation techniques so that you can feel less tension and so that your skin can look healthier. Taking some time each day to take a walk in nature, to do yoga, or to give yourself a face massage can go a long way in helping your acne and in your overall health.
